Photo of Uttar Pradesh CM Yogi Adityanath sitting in front of a laptop is being shared with a claim that he is watching live cremation of the 19-year-old Hathras victim, whose last rites were hurriedly performed in the dead of the night, earlier this week. The Dalit woman’s family alleged that the local police forced them to conduct the last rites.
The photo is being shared with this claim across social media platforms.
Twitter user Javed Pathan posted the photo with this claim.

Facebook page Jai Bhim Channel also shared the photo in a video to attack CM Yogi and PM Modi.

The photo is a digitally-altered version of the original visual where Yogi is speaking to the family of Hathras gang-rape victim via video conferencing on a laptop.
Using reverse-image search, we found the original photo being carried by several credible news portals.
It was tweeted by news agency ANI on September 30, 2020.

“Lucknow: Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath speaks to the family of #Hathras gang-rape victim, via video conferencing,” read the text accompanying the original photo.
Looking at the original photo, it becomes clear that the visuals of the cremation have been superimposed on the laptop screen in front of Yogi.
The cremation visuals have been taken from a photo tweeted by journalist Tanushree Pandey on September 30, 2020. She has been live-reporting from Hathras for the past several days.
“Hathras victim burnt against her family’s will. Police locked family members & locals inside the house & forcibly burnt the body. Family couldn’t even see their daughter for one last time. If torture done to the girl was horrific. This is beyond humanity. We’re finished,” read the tweet posted by her.

Times Fact Check has found that claim of CM Yogi watching live cremation of Hathras gang-rape victim is false. The photo used to make this claim is digitally-morphed.
